Housekeeper

A housekeeper in "private service" is responsible for the overall cleanliness and "daily graces" of the home.  A Housekeeper may be the only housekeeper in the Principal’s household or may be part of a multi-staffed household department within a larger estate.

Housekeepers Work in all Types of Homes - From Casual to Very Formal

Housekeepers work in all types of homes, from those with a casual atmosphere to formal, multi-staffed homes. This position involves daily maintenance of the home as well as light and heavy cleaning. Housekeepers are usually supervised by the principals of the home or Household Manager. Housekeepers usually work alone, but should the needs of the home demand multiple staff, they may work as a team with other housekeepers.

Staffing Guidelines for Hiring Housekeepers

  • As a general guideline, a full-time Housekeeper is recommended for homes of 5000 sq. ft. or more.
  • If errands, cooking, and laundry are also required, hiring an additional housekeeper is recommended

A Housekeeper

  • Does not have supervisory responsibilities
  • Usually works alone
  • May work in a single or multi-staffed household
  • May report to the Principal directly or to a Household Manager / Butler in a more formal and larger household
  • May work either full-time or part-time
  • May have several other housekeeping jobs, if not employed 40 hours per week by one household
  • May live-in or live-out

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • HS degree is preferred by many households; GED is also acceptable
  • While they may not have formal training, they should have experience working in a private home
  • Some are also skilled in laundry, ironing, and cooking that they have learned through their private service jobs

Housekeeper's Range of Responsibilities

  • Clean the interior of the home to include heavy and light cleaning
  • May do the laundry, both household and personal; may iron, may mend or sew, if skilled
  • Make beds and change bedding;  polishing the silver; 
  • Organize drawers and straighten closets 
  • Maintain stock of routine cleaning and household supplies 
  • Care for household pets; tending house plants 
  • Run errands including the grocery shopping 
  • May do light cooking and serve meals for the household and or assist with cooking and serving for special events

Compensation

  • Salary is based upon the candidate's experience, duties and the hours describe in the job description 
  • The salary range for Housekeepers is usually between $20 - $30 per hour or more, plus benefits depending upon metropolitan area, region or country
