Many companies seek Full Charge Bookkeepers whose bookkeeping expertise allows them to work through financial statements. These positions are more likely to be found in smaller to midsize organizations where communication with the President or owner may take place daily, therefore, good people and communication skills, and the ability to work with a diverse staff and vendors is a strong plus. Full-Charge Bookkeepers are highly motivated; they are self-starters that have the ability to prioritize, multi-task, problem solve and make reasonable administrative decisions based on company policies and practices. This position generally reports to the President, Owner or the highest level management position in the company.
Education, Experience, & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or Finance
- 5+ years bookkeeping experience although requirements may differ from one company to another
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook is required;
- Proficiency in quickbooks, Peachtree, Great Plains, MAS 90 etc depending upon the industry or possibly other proprietary software may be required
Typical Duties May Include:
- Prepare the monthly trial balance
- Prepare monthly financial statements generally for CPA review
- Prepare reports and summaries for management
- May prepare sales reports in a smaller organization
- May also prepare and process payroll in a smaller organization
- Track fixed assets and prepare depreciation schedules
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Make bank deposits, reconcile bank statements
- Prepare quarterly tax filings
- May handle some human resource functions to include benefits administration
- May purchase office supplies
- May supervise clerical staff
Other companies seek Full-Charge Bookkeepers whose bookkeeping expertise allows them to work through the general ledger since their company’s financials are produced by outside accounting professionals such as CPA firms or other in-house accounting professionals. These individuals should also be highly motivated, self-starters that have the ability to prioritize and multi-task. And, most importantly, in today’s world, they must possess strong communication, organization and customer service skills

- A high school degree is required and some accounting training may be preferred
- Associate Arts Degree, Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or Finance may also be required
- 3-5+ years’ bookkeeping experience; requirements may differ from one company to another
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook is required;
- Proficiency in quickbooks, Peachtree, Great Plains etc. or other proprietary accounting software may be required
Typical Duties May Include:
- Maintains and handles all books through the adjusted trial balance
- Performs month-end closings
- Records assets, leases and expenditures and performs the monthly bank reconciliation.
- Analyzes and corrects current-period errors in the general ledger.
- Does the payroll, files federal and state payroll tax returns and computes related deposits.
- Preparing the trial balance
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable processing
- Preparing bank deposits, bank reconciliation
- May purchase office supplies
- May supervise clerical staff
