Upcoming Changes to FAMLI Signed into Law in the 2025 Colorado Legislative Session

Posted by: Karen Booher on June 13th, 2025

Late last month, Governor Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 25-144, Concerning Changes to the “Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Act” (FAMLI) into law.

1.  The law creates a new leave category, called Neonatal Care Leave, which allows parents covered by the FAMLI plan (or other state-approved paid leave plan) to take up to an additional 12 weeks of paid time off while their newborn is receiving inpatient care in a neonatal intensive care unit. This is in addition to the up to 12 weeks provided by FAMLI in an application year for those who qualify for Parental (Bonding) Leave, and up to 16 weeks for those who experience pregnancy or childbirth complications. This applies to claims arising on or after January 1, 2026.

2.  The law also lowers premiums for FAMLI coverage from .90% of wages to .88% of wages starting January 1, 2026.
